This article explores the evolution of pan-Asianism through the periodization into three phases: the beginning period of 19th century, the middle from Russo-Japanese war to the Manchurian Incident and the final of ‘Fifteen Years War’, focusing on its genealogy, typology and horizon. According to the analysis, pan-Asianism appeared with Western invasion to Asia the mid-19th century when Japanese intellectuals started to search for solution to overcome national and regional security crisis under the angle of the Asian ‘same race and same culture’(d?bun d?shu). During this period, pan-Asianism conceived the discourse of Japanese leadership (meishuron) in Asia, but it could not be overtly combined with Japanese foreign policy due to governmental Civilization project. ‘Asia’ remained only a discursive ‘imagination’. During middle period of its development, going through the Russo-Japanese War and the World War I, the discourse of ‘same culture and same race’ in pan-Asianism became dominant within the intellectual milieu and the discourse of Japanese leadership was gradually accepted as Japanese foreign policy discourse by politicians and military men. The third period saw clear combination between the pan-Asianism and Japanese foreign policy: pan-Asianism played a significant role as a wartime ideology. In this last phase, pan-Asianism came to be practiced under new regional order project beyond intellectual discourse. In sum, pan-Asianism in modern East Asia was a discourse (and/or) a movement (and/or) a policy that intended to establish a transnational Asian solidarity, but could not transcend national interests. In this regard, pan-Asianism might be characterized by its transnational nationalism or national transnationalism connoting inherent aporia and ambivalence.
