Arari transmitted in Gangwon-do Province is regarded as the oldest version of Arirang songs from which other Arirang songs were developed. Aran was originally a farming song and was spreaded in the neighbor areas such as Gyeonggi-do Province. It was also the mother tune of modern Arirang which was composed fur the 1926 film Arirang directed by Na Un-gyu. Most scholars argued that Gin Aran (slow Aran) of Gangwon-do Province was the mother tune of Gin Arirang of Gyeonggi-do Province from which the faster Jajin Arirang was made. In this paper, I examine the musical characteristics of Arari and the derivative relation of Arari and Arirang.
Gin Arari, also called Jeongseon Arirang, is song on semachi (9/8 meter) rhythmic cycle. It is, however, song by a solo singer fur firming in a sad mood that it is a very slow-tempo song with free meter. It also requires a very articulated vocal technique. Jajin Aran, also called Gangwon-do Arirang, is song on 10/8 meter which is an old rhythmic pattern and is a natural meter to express Korean voice intonation.
Contra to the established theory of the derivative relation of Arari and Arirang, I found a new relation of slow-and fast-tempo Aran songs. It is certain that slow-tempo Arari and Arirang and fast-tempo Aran and Arirang were developed independently. In other words, Gin Arari is the mother tune of Gin Arirang, while Jajin Arari is the mother tune of Jajin Arirang. Gin Aran and Jajin Aran were developed separately in other areas of Gangwon-do Province and became the authentic form of Arirang songs.
