It is a well-known fact that Teisho's literature had great influence on the works of Akinari in the genre of Yomihon. It is quite certain that Akinari inherited the various writing skills from Teisho in his main theme and spirit of writing as well as in his writing style, components, and even his literary taste. However, viewed the predecessors' researches, I figured out that they overemphasized on the intimate relationship between the two writers because they examined only the similarities between Teisho and Akinari in terms of their common perspective on the women in their construction of female characters. In addition, most critics concluded in the long run that the trend of the sexual discrimination appeared in Teisho's works was totally inherited in Akinari's writing.
I do not deny that such a traditional interpretation on Teisho and Akinari, but I wanted to develop a new perspective on their relationship in this paper. It would be an agreeable interpretation if we notice that the main concern of Akinari' s construction of male characters is the social role of men, which Teisho stressed on his most literary works. In spite of their common interests in the human being as a social existence, as I found in the works of Akinari, he seems to point out the limits of Teisho's view which is lack of the conscience and the responsibility in main characters. Therefore, I think that although Akinari tried to follow Teisho's main stream of the social structure, he overcome Teisho and made a specific progress in constructing a perfect human of the male character. In this paper I demonstrated this point by means of revealing Akinari' s description of the characteristics of a man who is willing to sacrifice himself and takes a responsibility of his social context.
