The purpose of this paper is to report the results of an experiment with Korean EFL learners. The experiment was designed to investigate the following issues: 1) whether the type of dictionary used during reading comprehension tests affect test scores; 2) if it does, which type of dictionary, monolingual or bilingual, boosts test scores; and 3) whether we can find a significant correlation between a subject' proficiency level in reading and the type of dictionary which improves reading comprehension test scores. The findings show that there is a significant correlation between reading comprehension test scores and the type of dictionary used by subjects with low proficiency; they achieved higher scores when they were allowed to use English-Korean(bilingual) dictionary during tests. In addition, subjects with high proficiency scored significantly better only on vocabulary tests when they were given a Korean-Korean (monolingual) dictionary.
