This article aims at clarifying the character of The Academy for the Grandson-Heir Apparent(世孫講書院), which was installed to educate grandsons of king in the Joseon Dynasty. For this purpose, the curriculum, rites and the transformation process of The Academy for the Grandson-Heir Apparent(世孫講書院) are summarized objectively.
In the Joseon Dynasty, The Academy was established five times: 1448, 1648,1751,1759, and 1829, to educate Royal family members such as kings Danjong(端宗), Hyunjong(顯宗), Jeongjo(正祖), and Heonjong(憲宗) and the Grandson-Heir Apparent Uiso(懿昭世孫) In the curriculum of this organization, Elementary Learning(小學) and Book of Filial Piety(孝經) were supposed to be taken as elementary subjects and students advanced to higher courses like the bibles of confucianism and history books.
In this article, the curriculums of The Elementary Learning and The Great Learning(大學) that were carried out to teach king Jeongjo were analyzed.
The Elementary Learning and The Great Learning were the essential subject in the curriculum for scholar-officials(士大夫) But these textbooks had different meaning in the curriculum for the grandson-heir apparent. These textbooks were used as manuals for cultivating their moral attitude and preparing to be a ruler.
This organization had two lecture systems. Beobgang(法講) was practiced regularly, Hwoegang(會講) was practiced to evaluate what they had learned at the previous classes. In principle, Beobgang was reguarly carried out everyday but in the case of Jeongjo it was carried out every two days for his young age and supplementary lessons were performed to cover his deficit of studying.
In the royal family of the Joseon Dynasty, education and governing the people were combined like a toothed wheel. Education for cultivating one's moral culture and education for governing the people were practiced, in this sense, the studying of The Elementary Learning and the research of The Great Learning were also reciprocal for educating the Grandson-Heir Apparent.
