In this paper a study of Se-Ja-Si-Kang-Won (世子侍講院) in Chos?n Dynasty. Se-Ja-Si-Kang-Won (世子侍講院) was an royal educational institute for teaching royal prince Seo-Yun(書筵).
The education for Wang-Se-Ja can be explained effectively according to two periods : before and after Check-Bong(冊封, investiture). Before Check-Bong, an institution called Bo-Yang-Chung (輔養廳) was established, and it took a role for both protecting and rearing Wang-Se-Ja(王世子). When he grew up enough to be able to read books, an institution called Kang-Hak-Chung(講學廳) was established for the education for his youth. After Check-Bong(冊封), an institution called Se-Ja-Si-Kang-Won(世子侍講院) was established and served full-scale education in preparation for his eventual succession of the throne. Meanwhile, there was also an institution called Se-Ja-Ik-Wee-Sa (世子翊衛司) for the purpose of protecting him.
Choson dynasty also had institutions for educating Se-Son who belongs to royal families, but is not Wang-Se-Ja, because from time to time it happened that Se-Son succeeded the throne of the King, instead of Wang-Se-Ja. Se-Son-Kang-Seo-Won (世孫講書院)이나 Se-Son-Wee-Jong-Sa (世孫衛從司) are such institutions. However, the status of these institutions were different from that of institutions for Wang-Se-Ja. Se-Ja-Si-Kang-Won (世子侍講院) is not a standing institution, yet was equipped with systematic organization. It seems to reflect the superior status of Se-Ja-Si-Kang-Won (世子侍講院) to the institutions for educating Se-Son.
The specific stipulations on the organization of Se-Ja-Si-Kang-Won(세자시강원, 世子侍講院) are found in the canons of Kyung-Kuk-Dae-Jeon (經國大典) and Sok-Dae-jeon (續大典), etc.
First, the canon of Kyung-Kuk-Dae-Jeon (經國大典) shows the organizational change of it during the first half of Cho-Sun Dynasty (朝鮮王朝). In the canon, I was able to know that as a whole during the first half of the dynasty the number of officials for Se-Ja-Si-Kang-Won decreased from sixteen to twelve, and that there were some changes such as changes of name of position and establishments of new position.
Second, the canon of Sok-Dae-jeon (續大典) shows the organizational change of it during the second half of Cho-Sun Dynasty. (朝鮮王朝). According to the canon, the number of officials for Se-Ja-Si-Kang-Won rebounded back up to twenty from twelve, and it was due to the increase of Gyum-Jik (兼職) and San-Lim-Jik (山林職). And the rank of it in this canon rose from Jong-Sam-Pum-Ah-Mun (從三品衙門) to Jeong-Sam-Pum-Ah-Mun (正三品衙門).
After Sok-Dae-Jeon (續大典), another elevation in rank can be found in another cannon Dae-leon-Hoe-Tong (大典會通). That is, in this canon 보덕(輔德)과 겸보덕(兼輔德) both of which were ranked as Jong~Sam-Pum(從三品) were elevated as Jeong-Sam-Pum (正三品). Except this, there was no difference between Sok-Dae-Jeon and Dae-Jeon-Hoe-Tong about Se-ja-Si-Kang-Won (世子侍講院). And yuk-Jeon-Jo-Rye (六典條例) had no change about it since then.
Kyeongyun(經筵) a royal banquet among king and subjects, had not only educational function, but also political function including discussion of political affairs. And the latter was more important and main purpose of the royal banquet, 'Kyeongyun'. except special occasions, Seo-Yun(書筵) only had an educational function.
The educational course of Se-Ja-Si-Kang-Won (世子侍講院) mainly consisted of basic Confucian Classics or the Four Books.
