Surveying the role of Lee Jon-chang and the spread of Catholicism, the present paper attempts to overcome problems associated with current studies of social and religious communities in the Naepo area during the late Choson. Despite the disagreement over Lee Jon-chang’ s social status, he probably was not included into the yangban but a commoner with a considerable economic basis. While he had been committed to the Wang Yangming school, he turned to the Catholic as he met Kwon Cheol-sin of the Seongho school.
Lee’s missionary activities from 1785 to the martyrdom in 1801 could be divided into four phases, Yeosaul, Hongsan, Gosan and Cheonan. The Naepo Catholic community established by him was differed from that of Seoul in that the Naepo community was mainly consisted of commoners. Charity activities by the Naepo Catholic community drew many outside people, and even there was a request from China to dispatch a missionary.
The most hotly debated issue is about his apostasy and martyrdom. Despite the disagreement, Bishop Davely and Father Dallet provided important suggestions. In other words, it is understandable that his apostasy was exaggerated in the historical record edited by the Joseon administration. He was put to death in the cruel suppression known as Catholic Persecution of 1801.
