Korean Catholicism, which was begun by intellectuals out of academic curiosity in the 18th century, has been accommodated and developed in line with Korean cultural climate. The history of Catholicism in Korea, however, was not all smooth sailing. With accusations of threatening the existing social order, tradition and especially social foundations built by Sung Confucianism, Catholicism was ruthlessly persecuted. In the hardship, it was Catholics who kept catholic existence and presence alive in Korea. Although those days were mainly marked by persecution and oppression that were threatening their survival, their religious unity was also strengthened at the same time. In the course of avoiding persecution, the catholics built up Catholic Brotherhood Communities, religious life communities. They were inevitably kept in secret their religious faith and had economic problems because of continuous oppression and fear of being tracked down.
The measure to settle the religious and economic problems, was producing Onggi in catholic villages. By using various patterns on the surface of Onggi, they expressed crisscross designs which symbolized the Catholic God. Throughout creating various crisscross patterns on Onggi, they represented their strong creed secretly. With sacred objects such as Bibles and Crosses hided in Onggi, they did missionary works and set up a contacting system among the faithful. Profits they made from selling Onggi allowed the believers to earn their livelihoods. In sum, the Catholics produced Onggi as a means of propagation of Christianity and their living. Life in the Catholic Brotherhood Community also provided them with the opportunity to practice ideas of equality-communal production and equal distribution. For them, the community was the ideal society where both economic and religious activities were secured.
It seems that in this paper there is much deficiency in the sense that there has not been sufficient researches on the Onggi-producing Catholic Brotherhood Communities with overlook. So, further studies and researches on this subject are anticipated to be conducted in the future.
