The Catholic Boys was a magazine for boys and girls, completely written in Korean, published by the Yanji(延吉) Diocese from April of 1936 to August of 1938. The origins of The Catholic Boys can be traced to the The Bulletin of the society of Saint Tharcicius, which was published by the society of Saint Tharcicius as part of the boys movement of the Yanji Diocese. Balduin Appelmann O.S.B., the overseer of the Longjing(龍井) Parish was appointed as executive officer, and a former theology student was made the editor. Until late 1936, the publishing was aided by the renowned literary figure, Lee Sang(李箱), and was done at Chang-moon sa(彰文社), located in Seoul. Lee Sang also drew the covers of The Catholic Boys and submitted a poem as well. The Yanji Diocese did contribute financially to the magazine, but nevertheless, the financial troubled led to its demise. A total of twelve people, were devoted to the editing, printing, and distribution of the magazine. It is roughly assumed that about ten thousand issues were printed.
The Catholic Boys was a magazine made for young boys and girls, but it is also important to note its devotion to spreading the word of the Lord as Catholic missionaries. Thus, there was a plethora of articles and reports emphasizing the virtue of Catholicism. However, The Catholic Boys was published in the Chien-tao(間島), reducing its potential of attaining a more national status as a magazine. While numerous Catholic literary figures of the day participated in The Catholic Boys, embedded articles regarding politics or espousing a certain political view were excluded.
The Catholic Boys was suddenly discontinued, its final issue being that of August, 1939. The most crucial reason for its discontinuation was financial loss. However, the pressure of Japan's Assimilation Policy might have been another reason why The Catholic Boys was discontinued.
