Chung-nam province in Joseon Dynasty was basically divided into Naepo(內浦) cultural areas and Keumgang-river areas, with being situated in the middle of Keumbuck mountain line. Naepo areas were the places that showed dynamics and openness due to their marine feature of the west sea of Korea, which was different from Keumgang-river areas. These areas were ordinary people-oriented due to the commercial development because of the reason that it was the intermediate place of ‘water traffic’, connecting three southern-local provinces and the capital area. Meanwhile, enfolding Asan bay, inside river areas were geographically center-placed since it has a common life zone of the capital, Seoul, and Kyunggi province.
These advantages that Naepo areas contained turned out to be a disaster during the Invasion of Japan, which was an unprecedented war between the two nations. It was because those areas became the largest evacuation places in the early period of the war, and were forced, due to its geographical advantages, to play a crucial role in supporting logistics of Joseon army. As a result, experiences that Naepo areas had to go through were more horrible than those of areas directly occupied by Japanese army, which resulted in ordinary people’s seriously suffering. In the middle of this situation, those places were considered as disserted by the Joseon government, with revolts taking places such as the revolt of ‘Song yoojin’ and ‘Lee monghak’. It had to take a long time to cure the pain and recover its own shape even after the tragedy of war since the wound was so deep.
After the war, Naepo areas became the places of interests by the elite officials of the Seoul. It’s because those areas were known as places appropriate for escaping since there are mountains and stable walls of defense, and there are abundant natural products, which derives from Asan bay. Moreover, those places became known as good shelters because they are located nearby Gongju’s Yoogu, places regarded as sincerely safe in the period of natural and artificial disasters. In conclusion, it is likely that new cultural waves of elite officials were gradually formed right after elite officials flew into Naepo areas and settled down as of 17th century.
