Sugi(隨記) stored in Jangseokgak library of the Academy of Korean Studies, is a book of replies of Park Jongak(朴宗岳) on the royal letters of King Chongjo(正祖), which contains various new facts on the initial Catholic history of Korea. The contents of the book were direct report to the King by Park Jongak, the governor of Chungcheong province(忠淸道) who was responsible for the examination of the Naepo(內浦) Catholic Church in Chungcheong province at the Catholic Persecution of 1791(辛亥迫害). Accordingly, Sugi is expected to be used importantly for the study of the initial Catholic history of Korea which has been largely dependent on Dallet’s A History of the Church in Korea.
New facts by the discovery of Sugi can be summarized into three. Firstly, the spread of Catholic in Naepo area of Chungcheong province was far earlier than known today, and its congregation was spread throughout Chongcheong province. It is conjectured that Catholic Church in Naepo was formed in 1784~1785. In 1791 when the examination by Park Jongak started, it was widely spread throughout Chongcheong province beyond Naepo.
Secondly, it contains information of important figures of the initial Catholic history of Korea. Sugi contains new information of Yi Jonchang(李存昌), who was known as the leading figure in the spread of Catholic Church in Naepo, and of brothers of Hong Nakmin(洪樂民) who had considerable influence on Catholic Church in this area. Besides, the list of Catholics and Catholic books in Sugi seem to contribute to figure out the reality of the initial Catholic history of Korea.
Thirdly, it contains the response of King Chongjo on Catholic Church. While he understood the reality of Chungcheong province from the report of Park Jongak, he took moderate measures with unofficial actions. This seems because he considered the political impact by the persecution of Catholic Church, which needs further investigation.
