Researches on English modal auxiliaries so far have focused primarily on their forms and/or meanings. However, they are frequently used to show the speaker's purpose of utterance, opinion, or attitude toward the proposition expressed in the utterance.
The aim of this paper is to show that English speakers use auxiliaries to fulfill specific communicative goals in everyday conversation. Such goals might include giving an indirect order, blame, request, advice, permission or prohibition with the speaker's authority, doubt, commitment on the truth of the proposition expressed, etc.
We have found some discourse characteristics with which English modal auxiliaries are closely associated. Those are as follows: First, an auxiliary carries various meanings depending on the discourse context where it occurs. For example, 'should' has an obligation meaning in one context, and an inference meaning in another context. Second, an English modal auxiliary can be used in differentiated discourse contexts, which affects its discourse function. For instance, 'must' with a strong obligation meaning is used for indirect command, advice, requirement, etc. with the implication of the speaker's authority. 'Should' expressing a moral obligation or duty is used for cooperative suggestion. 'May' is used for either giving or asking personal permission. Third, a deontic modal auxiliary often functions as an epistemic marker. For example, 'must' is used to express the speaker's confident inference on the truth of the proposition expressed from the evidence available. 'Should' signals the speaker's tentative assumption of the truth of the proposition expressed. Fourth, there are some cases in which the functions of a modal auxiliary can be clarified by stress and intonation. For instance, the stressed 'may' with fall-rise intonation in "He tray leave tomorrow" functions as an epistemic modal marker with the meaning of inference. In contrast, the unstressed 'may' functions as a deontic modal marker with a permission meaning. Fifth, English modal auxiliaries tend to be chosen depending on the speaker's purpose of utterance such as command, advice, request, blame, suggestion, regret, complaint, doubt, etc.
In conclusion, English modal auxiliaries are closely associated with various discourse characteristics. Thus, it is strongly required to comprehensively and systematically study English modal auxiliaries from the discourse perspective.(Pusan University of Foreign Studies)
