This paper presents a study of English modal auxiliaries from a grammaticalization perspective. The main goal of the paper is to show how effectively the theory of grammaticalization can explain the present English modal auxiliary system through examining synchronic distribution and exploring diachronic process. Firstly, structural changes involved in the development of modal auxiliaries are considered. Next, we deal with the most important aspect of grammaticalization: semantic shift and its mechanism. The study of semantic change is important not only because it is a cause of structural change, but also because it provides a clue as to how human cognition and pragmatic use of language interact. Finally, the development of English modal auxiliaries is conceptualized by the overlap model, and the modal auxiliary system is understood in terms of the relative location along the Verb-to-TAM chain proposed by Heine(1993).
