In the research of Shell Mounds of Korean Southern Coastal Area in the Neolithic Age, we can find evidence that the sea level had risen sometime in the past. Through traces such as mixture of layers in the Shell Mounds, sedimentary layers between Shell Mounds, and so on, we are quite sure about the rise. Yet, there have been few studies dealing with the reason and time of this phenomenon in depth. The reason we focus on this phenomenon lies in the possibility that it might not be a regional phenomenon but rather a world-wide one, that it might have had a deep impact on the life of prehistoric human being, and that it could have a significant importance on our understanding of human being's countermeasures and resulting consequences.
Shell Mound of the Dongsamdong in Pusan is a very popular and important remain studied by many researchers and research organizations. In a recent study of this Shell Mound, evidences such as several layers of gravel inside the mound and erosion of top layer of the mound were found. After collecting similar evidences around Korean Southern Coastal Area to this phenomenon, I studied time and size of the rise of the sea level.
According to the result, a big rise of the sea level occurred around B.C. 4000 - from the late Neolithic Age to the end of the Neolithic Age. The height of the rise was average 7~8 meter, up to 13 meter high. This environmental change must have a big impact on the life of the people living in the region at that time. In the future study, we need to focus on restoring the environment at that time and to study changing pattern of the environment.
