The beacon system was one of the national defense systems in the history of Korea. A beacon mound had several functions such as the surveillance network of the external aggression, the meteorological observation, and the detection of the school of fish. Korea had so many beacon mounds around the country, so that it is enough to be called as, 'a country of beacons.'
Among the beacons in Korea, the coastal beacons(the lighthouses) had a critical significance related with the fact that three sides of Korea peninsula is surrounded by the sea and the huge number of the coastal beacon mounds that Korea had. The central government also had a deep interest on the coastal beacons, which are actually on the border.
These coastal beacons functioned much more than a lighthouse, and the functions are as following. First of all, it functioned as a coastal surveillance system for the national defence. It also functioned for the local unity of the systematic information network among the military, the state, and the people. Other functions of the coastal beacon system are the meteorological observation, the vessel observation, the detection of the waterway, the navigation guide, and the fish-finder.
