British English has its own characteristic features and has developed as a language for the whole world. And English as spoken and written in America has been acquired a character fo its own, reflecting the growth and history of the American community.
The interaction and the relations between britain and America themselves changed, which also affected the story of English.
The purpose of the study is to see what are the differences between british English and American English in vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling and grammar by looking the historical background and the process of the development in two countries.
The past history of English on the two sides of the Atlantic begins with Elizabethan English transported to the New World.
Gradually a distinctive American English grew up and became no longer a colonial variant but a partner with british English, and a powerful source of innovation and coinings. and so, they have influenced each other, that is, the interactions as follows:
In the first, American English was "colonial" in status and British English was dominant. During this phase the influence and the flow of development was from British to American English, with only rare exceptions as the produce of the New World became known in Europe.
In the third phase, which confinues at the present time, American English emerges as of equal status and value with British English and in some respects reversing the earlier flow of influence, so that it is frequently British English which draws on American English.
