This Study will demonstrate the dialectics of an enlightenment narrative in North Korea literature that was characteristic of the literature in the period of Liberation, by centering on the novel The Land(땅) of Lee Gi-yeong(이기영). Why plunged the South and North Korea into a barbarism, not into a human community. Why were they set against each other in the age that they should overcome the fetters under the Japanese Imperialism and try to find ways of peaceful coexistence. And why brought they disaster, the Korean War, upon themselves? This paper were motivated this questions.
The Earth, the first novel in North Korea, is very useful text for a study of discourse in the period of a establishment of the state system, because it is closely connected with the policy of culture and arts at that time. This novel functioned as a enlightenment narrative, which aimed at total integration of the people into the socialist state-system by carrying out the policy of ‘the General Mobilization Movement for the Spirit of the National Foundation’(1946. 12). In result, the politics of the Party possessed absolute enormous power as a superior subject, the people were degenerated into a object and a subordinate subject. Kang Gyun(강균), who is the leader of a communist cell, is a embodiment of the Party and is symbolized as a superior subject. But the figures of the people, Koak Ba-wi(곽바위), Jeon Sun-ok(전순옥) etc. are regarded as objects, subordinate subjects of the socialist state system. And Ko Byeong-sang(고병상), the landed class, is regarded as ‘the other’, the hostile class, and is excluded from the state system.
