The aim of this research is to improve the way of improving vocabulary knowledge in reading classes. As a primary step, this study explores what vocabulary knowledge means and how functions in reading.
Vocabulary knowledge should not be marginalized in reading classes, since it is closely related to accurate captureing of writers' thoughts.
The researcher argues that both quantitative and qualitative aspects of vocabulary knowledge should be taken into consideration in reading classes, which means deep knowledge about the diverse usages of a word is as important as broad pick-up of many words. The researcher also argues vocabulary knowledge is not only required for communication but also related to understanding of social and cultural context.
On the basis of above observation and exploration, this present study suggests five steps for teaching vocabulary in reading classes; the analogy of meaning of a word in a sentence, the acquirement of meaning of the word through dictionary look-up, the usage of the word in relation to other words, the expansion of the usage of the word after full understanding of the meaning, and the internalization of learning of the word.
