This study investigates the effect of a vocabulary instruction on vocabulary learning strategy use and the achievement. One hundred female college students participated in the study. The data for this study were collected from two questionnaires and two sets of vocabulary test scores. An analysis of the results revealed several important points. In the beginning of the semester, the higher vocabulary achievement level students used more vocabulary learning strategies than the lower level students did. However, there was no significant difference in using vocabulary learning strategies between the groups after they were taught vocabulary lessons including vocabulary learning strategies. Both groups got to use vocabulary learning strategies more actively, which helped them to enhance their vocabulary achievement. This study implies that teaching vocabulary learning strategies can be an effective way to expand a learner’s lexical knowledge.
