Miscellaneous posts occupied a certain portion of the entire pool of governmental posts, and were established during the early days of the Joseon dynasty. These miscellaneous posts were not established until the reigning days of King Saejong, and those miscellaneous posts' being established meant that the governmental structure of posts was being finalized and completed. This completed structure also brought final dictations to the relationship that should have existed between governmental posts, and social statuses of those personnel who would have occupied those posts.
In this article, the process in which these miscellaneous posts were established, and also came to exhibit certain changes later on, is examined. These miscellaneous posts became an issue of interest during King Saejong's reign, and eventually a group of miscellaneous posts came to be arranged and established, and the examination in this article tried to follow that procedure carefully. Surely, this process cannot be effectively reviewed unless the condition that led up to such establishment during King Saejong's reign is examined as well. So the miscellaneous posts that had existed since the very foundation of the Joseon dynasty, and during the reigning days of Kings that came before Saejong, are also examined. And regarding the following periods, the changes that occurred with regard to the miscellaneous posts, and the apparent expansion of usages and titles of those miscellaneous titles, are examined as well. In that regard, the reigning days of King Seongjong are particularly reviewed.
Through this kind of process, miscellaneous posts were established as posts where technician officials, Jabjik-Yupum figures, and miscellaneous officials were usually assigned to. And the notion that miscellaneous posts were posts designated to be filled by middle level figures and not Sajok scholar-officials was established as well. This kind of establishment demonstrates the nature of the miscellaneous posts in terms of social status. And persons with illegitimate births came to be assigned to these posts as well, reinforcing the notion regarding the social status of those posts.
