The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of goal orientation on language learner's strategy in learning English. This study assumed two goal orientations which involve learning and performance orientation, and three language learning strategies which can be classified into deep, surface, and functional strategies. Factor analysis was employed to confirm the existence of goal orientation and language learning strategy which was claimed in the previous research. Results supported the existence of both learning and performance orientation, and showed that four factors were extracted from the survey of language learning strategies. They were labeled functional strategy, memory strategy, cognitive strategy, and metacognitive strategy. To know the correlation among these factors, the canonical correlation analysis was undertaken. Each goal orientation was separated into that of Low and High group according to the mean of learning and performance orientation. These four groups were tested with ANOVA to know the difference between the language learning strategies. The result indicated that language learning goal orientation was related to the four strategies; however, performance goal orientation had only some influence on cognitive strategy.
