If historical novels were classified as belonging to the realm of literature, and not of historical studies, any attempt by historians to discuss 'the challenges facing historical novels' would be futile. But, since historians are no less readers than literary critics, their review of historical novels should be considered as relevant as that of literary critics. Besides, there should be some criteria when it comes to reviewing historical novels. Historical novels are not fiction, but merely a reconstruction of historical events through fiction. Thus, a correct perspective on historical novels will be gained only when their inherent characteristics an objective reproduction of facts and their culmination into a novel are fully taken into account when reviewing them.
There have not been as many theoretical approaches to or debates over historical novels as their popularity would suggest, neither among literary men nor historians. In fact, only a few literary critics and historians, partially interested in historical novels, have taken notice of them. This is evidenced by the absence of any list of or statistics about historical novels. Paradoxically, it also reflects the fact that historians have been so immersed in their own field of study and the authors in writing their novels that none of them ever considered the influence their work would have on the readers.
In all, there are 133 historical novels on the Koryo Dynasty, thirty-one of them dealing with its early years, forty-five with the middle years, and fifty others with the last years. The remaining seven novels are not clear as to which period they are dealing with. And most of these novels display a character-centered development. Some of the novels have been reprinted later either at the readers'request or because the author himself wished to do so for commercial purposes. While some have been reprinted after revising or adapting their original versions, others, riding on the back of the social mood of the 1990s and the author's popularity, have been openly flaunted as popular novels. On the other hand, there is no shortage of novels about unofficial historical events based on the now-discarded theories or written with an uncritical attitude towards the [History of the Koryo Dynasty].
Historical novels should be based on theories deemed valid at the time of their writing. Novels written a generation earlier should thus be based on the historical theories valid at that time. It followsthat historical novels later reprinted or adapted for TV can hardly be compatible with historical theories valid today. Moreover, if new historical facts have been consolidated, or research results have been accumulated, such reprinted or adapted historical novels would only convey an outdated perspective on history.
