In China a genuine historical methodology began with Chih-chi Liu (劉知幾) during T'ang Dynasty. Chih-chi Liu, author of Shih-t'ung (史通), had enjoyed reading history in his childhood, and finally became a great historian of the profound historical knowledge. His unique historical theory is based on the extensive knowledge of history. He, who had been official history writer three times, was different from the others in his historical view. So he went into retirement and wrote Shih-t'ung.
The important contents of Shih-t'ung is that he put emphasis on Chi-ch'uan Style (紀傳體) and established the official historical style.
His historical theory is creative and objective. Moreover he arranged history depending on the inductive method, and his critical attitude was positive and vivid. By separating historical science from literature and setting up a new area of Chinese history, he provided a turning point for the development of historcal science.
It should be rated high that his new historical method took the lead in the direction of historical science. He contributed to the Chinese historical study for the future historians through the descriptions and the comments on all the historical word. In a word, he lay the foundation of Chinese history.
