Some scholars tend to describe the historical accidents not with the contemporary expressions and names but with the terms invented by themselves. It is, they say, for the objectivity, the universality and the freedom of thought that they change the historical nominations. The attempts bring some merit on surface but have more danger in depth, for they are not free from the doctrinal inclination, the political ideology and the religious belief.
And tbe problems of historical terminology have become serious as the historical terms were borrowed from other countries. Most of those terms were shaped not through our historical tradition and scholarship but from the perspectives and theories of other nations. In spite of this fact, the terms are accepted as native concepts and utilized for the enlightenment of the people. When these terms are used for the history writing, the scholars are always influenced by the patriotic mission of development. As a result the disputes concerning the terms become burning among the scholars with different points of view as if the historical fact and truth were found in the sphere of terminology.
So it is necessary to understand fully the significance of historical facts considering the complexity of Korean history and to delay the historical judgement on many cases until our capacities and situations pemlit it. And in order to enhance our historical perspectives, historians and history teachers should enlarge the fields of research and deepen the historical consciousness. In Korea our own historical consciousness was disconnected with the traditional historigraphy and became so narrow that we accept the inherited nominations as awkward ones today. Moreover scholars prefer the easy and popular terms in accordance with the social change.
Some educators recommend the simple and comprehensible vocabularies for the learners. But their recommendation cannot be a crterion for the edition of history teaching materials including history textbooks. For such a teaching method causes a deformation of historical image.
