During the Chinese Han(漢) dynasty period, several forms of games and plays developed for the sake of recreation and amusement, including various types of fancy performances, acrobatic feats and masque shows, were introduced to the Chinese people, from several regions which bordered upon Western China. These newly introduced formats of recreation were met with the pre-existing forms of recreation which were mostly based upon martial arts, and in the end came to comprise the so-called 'Baekhi pool of recreation formats(百戱: Hundreds of Formats devised for Recreation).
These Chinese 'Hundreds of Recreation Formats' were later introduced to the Goguryeo, Baekjae and Shilla dynasties. The mural painting, which is labelled as the 'Baekhi Giak-do(百戱伎樂圖: Hundreds of Recreation formats, the Skills and Music) and found from the Jangcheon Burial Mound No.1 of the Goguryeo dynasty, shows us that the Goguryeo people enjoyed the Baekhi pool of recreation formats which for the most part included the Gakjeo games, various forms of circus features and music. These Baekhi arts were featured at the Palgwan-hwae ceremonies of the Shilla dynasty as well, and also at such ceremonies of the following Goryeo dynasty.
The Baekhi pool of recreation formats included the Gakjeo games, the Subak plays, musical shows including the Cheoyong Dance performances, and also various types of acrobatics, stunts and circuses. During the Shilla dynasty period, the Hwarang Corps were in charge of making arrangements for the Palgwan-hwae ceremonies, so they must have enjoyed the Gakjeo or Subak games, which were featured as part of the Baekhi pool of recreation, during those occasions for the sake of recreation and amusement.
During the Unified Shilla dynasty period, the Hwarang Corps and the younger Nangdo apprentices of the Shilla dynasty should have further developed the Subak games which had hailed from the Three-dynasty period. And it is believed that the Goryeo dynasty inherited such games and plays for recreation, from the Unified Shilla people. Those skills and techniques must have ultimately contributed to the establishment of the Taegweondo arts, as they are today.
