Fiction is known as the form of literature having developed since the modern age. According to this, it is possible to insist there might be no modern fiction in the history of Chinese literature. With this, it is not saying too much that the theory on the novel has been studied by borrowing methods from the West. These days, however, the trend is changed. The researches to find out contemporarily shared traditional manners has eagerly been carried out, not just viewing the old ones in a new light.
This project is planned as a part of these efforts. Can the thoughts of fiction theorists give current readers existential meaning? Drawing universality from the meaning of traditional manners, you can apply it to the present. In this way, through their works the relationship between authors and readers in the universality can be discussed. That is, the interaction between authors and their works, or between readers and authors can be an issue in narrative.
I focus on the epistemological relationship between fiction and authors who themselves create it in this project. Jin Shengtan, a noted fiction theorist in the Ming and Qing Dynasty, also mentioned in the commentary of his work, Shuihu-zhuan(水滸傳) that authors actively contributed to the fictionalization of historical events.
First of all, he stated the relationship between events and writing in two concepts; words are used to carry events(以文運事) and events are produced from the words(因文生事). Furthermore, he argued that writing material is subject to events(文料說). Author's Mind(作者之心) is centered on that idea. He used the term to indicate an authors spirit or sentiment as well as his writing skills and he even referred to it as the source of literature.
Finally, Jin Shengtan insisted that fiction is newly created by an authors free inspiration; not transformed simply by building details like history or adding or removing plot. You can say that he acknowledges subjective activity as an artistic creative subject different from a category of reality or truth in events dealt with by an emperor and a prime minister. This point of his view deserves to be highly appreciated.
