There is a close relationship between poetry and the fictions in Ming and Qing Dynasties. A large amount of poetry enters into classical Chinese fictions such as Jian-deng xin-hua and Jian-deng yu-hua. Liao-zhai zhi-yi(Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio) mostly expresses the poetry emotion and the construction of the artistic conception of poetry. In Yue -wei cao-tang bi-ji, the accomplishment is not great though many poetry included. The San-Yan, Er-pai and Yi-xing in colloquial fictions all contain a large quantityof poetry and use poetry as opening and closing without exception. For the saga fiction divided in chapters, San-guo yan-yi(The Romance of the Three Kingdoms) uses poetry as comments while Shui-hu chuan(Water Margins) as description. In Xi-you ji(Journey to the West), poems are frequently used for describing persons and narrating matters. Jin-ping mei(The golden lotus) usually makes use of chi and qu as showing the characters of mundane literature. Hong-lou meng (A Dream of Red Mansions) includes the excellence of all the above and advances the use of poetry to the highest statue. In a word, the poetry used in classical Chinese fictions of Ming and Qing Dynasties mostly express emotions and the construction of the artistic conception of poetry while the poetry in colloquial novels emphasize particularly on the needs of form and narration etc.
