In recent years there has been growing increase in logistics costs of carriage, storage, packing, stevedoring, and information system. So we have to establish reasonable international logistics system to improve logistics efficiency, Especially we are behind ward in port stevedoring than any other elements in Korea, Our port has depended on the stevedoring labour very much until now. So we have to analyze current situations and problems of port stevedoring in Korea.
The purpose of this paper is to suggest how to improve logistics efficiency of port stevedoring operations compared with foreign ports.
Firstly, to improve and strengthen the logistics efficiency operations, our government has to modernize port stevedoring overhead capital facilities, and stevedoring equipments.
Secondly, most advanced nations induce private management of port. So we have to introduce it to cope with the change of international circumstances.
Thirdly, our stevedoring company does not have good equipments because of a small size in capital. So the company has to specialize in techniques and increase the capital.
Fourthly, a lot of cargo handling accidents have occured in port due to poor working environment, diversity of working place and method, and handling of dangerous cargo. So we have to perform a complete safety inspection of cargo handling equipments and tools and to carry out the dock work according to a working plan. The government has to teach its stevedores about safety consciousness, and activate a safety fund for port labourers.
Fifthly, in recent years, information service of port logistics generally involves the port administration service concerned with the port development and port operation. To improve effectiveness of port logistics and port stevedoring, it is necessary to have port information system like EDI.
