Sunflower(1923), a novel of Yem Sang-Seop in the colonial period, is a story of a woman just married. And the story-line of the fiction is her honeymoon journey with her husband. This fiction is far from the main streams of Yeom Sang-Seop's fiction and is estimated as an exemplary work in the period of the modern Korean fiction. And this is main reason why this fiction has not been fully inquired.
In this article, I focused the heroin of the fiction as one of the picara, the female version of the picaro. As an picara, the heroin of this fiction challenged the patriarchal norm of the society in the realm of the marriage. But she finally fails to gain the identity of herself as an individual woman and an artist because of her unmatured understanding of the world an herself.
This features of the heroine of this fiction demonstrate the characteristics of the picaresque fiction. In this respect, this work can be understand as an picaresque fiction, especially the modification of the novel genre in the 20th century in Korea. The mutability of the picaresque has much to do with its intrinsic hybridity as a result of a variety of different cultural and social pressures. This work is an evidence that the Modern Korean fiction was established within the impact of novel as a multinational phenomena.
In a series of the novel in that period, Yeom Sang-Seop produced some characters who can be called as picaro and picara. This means that the writer of the Japanese colonial period understand themselves as cultural heros and metaphorically played as picaros. That is the problematic status of the modern Korean writers and their early works of literature.
