Many of Lee Sang's works are written from his personal experiences made in Seongcheon(成川) in 1935. His Seongcheon experiences are well reflected in his last essay Weariness(倦怠) as well as in Sanchonyeojeong(山村餘情) and Notes of Fear(공포의 기록). In addition, his posthumous manuscripts written in Japanese are bases on which his genuine works are made. For instance, works such as The first Wandering(첫 번째 방랑), the series of Notes of Fear, The Foolish Dinner(어리석은 석반), Give Toys to these Boys(이 아해들에게 장난감을 주라), etc. are to be the orignal notes for Sanchonyeojeong, Notes of Fear, The Weariness. His Seongcheon experiences give birth to in the beginning the rhetoric of metaphor from wonder and fascination and later the rhetoric of metonymy from weariness and tedium. This is because he subjectifies the objects in the end, after having seen them in a situation of meditation.
Lee Sang's Seongcheon experiences are the original point in his literature. Even though Seongcheon is a place located far away from the modern capitalism, it has a great effect on his literature. It is the scene of his poems and fictions as well as his essays.
His Seongcheon experiences bring about many changes in his literature. First, they make his literature mature. Second, they make him entering into the world of the genuine fictions. Finally, owing to the experiences, he is able to improve his works rhetorically.
