Lee Sang’s novels are still problematic texts even today. Diverse themes and speculations, unique methodological experiments and vague and uncertain connotations,. are among the elements that weave Lee Sang’s texts into double or triple layers of meaning. Moreover, his writings such as poems, novels and essays,. are interconnected to form one gigantic network of meaning, preventing readers from easily approaching them. However, if we can find core elements in Lee Sang’s work and identify correlative relationships between these elements and their trends, we may find some clues that encompass his consciousness and texts.
Discussions of Lee Sang’s literature have so far been focused mainly on spatiality, his self-consciousness or on methodological issues, but few attempts have been made with relationship to time, which is the most fundamental condition of modern life. Moreover, of those emotions related to modernity, the concept of languor, which appears very frequently in his texts, has only been studied in fragments.
If the modern era is assumed to be in discontinuity with the pre-modern era, the modern consciousness of people can be said to have a very close relationship with conditions of the world. Of this, the concepts of time and space are the most elemental components of modern times. However, if we consider the fact that the essence of man has a stronger impression in time than in space, in terms of existence, then time would be a very special entity to modern people. Depending on how one understands the flow of time from past to present and future, and further, where to put oneself in that flow, the significance that a person’s life has would necessarily change in a comprehensive manner.
The views of modern people regarding time is linear, reflecting progressive and rational values, unlike the nature-oriented, cyclic view of the pre-modern period. In addition, one of the emotions that people might feel most frequently in this linear and progressive view is ‘languor.’ In Lee Sang’s texts, descriptions of this languor can be found frequently. If the most basic element that defines the consciousness of the modern world is time and additionally, one of peoples key responses towards the modern view of time is that of languor, the relationship between these two may be the starting point from which one can approach the texts of Lee Sang. Through the way in which languor is revealed, one can see the cross-section of modernity that Lee Sang felt.
In this writing, therefore, I would like to investigate the relationship between the modern view of time and of languor exhibited in Lee Sang’s texts. The main texts of this study have come from essays related to his visit to Seongcheon, whose themes are of languor and from the novels that picture his life in Kyungseong and Tokyo.
