The concept of “Heritage Place” was first introduced in a heritage context through the Burra Charter, Australia. Theconcept of place, encompassing both tangible and intangible dimensions, has become a term used to describe the multifacetedaspects of heritage. This approach aligns with the global shift towards expanding definitions of heritage and prioritizingsustainable conservation practices. Similarly, Korea is recognizing the spatial and temporal flexibility of heritage and is in theprocess of integrating a place-based approach into its conservation system. However, there is press need for specific practicalguidelines and related research. This Study aims to explore the concept of heritage place and the conservation process asdefine by the Burra Charter. It also suggests the application of heritage place conservation methodologies through acomparative analysis of place conservation cases. A heritage place is defined as a place recognized for its heritage valuethrough its tangible and intangible attributes. The existence of heritage place is derived from the values held by the people whoinhabit it. According the the Burra Charter, safeguarding these values should be the primary objective in the conservation ofheritage place, and the conservation actions may vary depending in cultural significance. Case Studies of Luna Park Sydney inAustralia and Gyeongju Yangdong Village in South Korea illustrate different approaches to conservation. In Australia, conservation efforts prioritize safeguarding the intangible values through ongoing use, whereas Korea’s fabric-focusedconservation system has not adequately addressed the social functions of the village. This discrepancy has led to variousissues within Gyeongju Yangdong Village. Based on these case studies, the study proposes that to effectively implement theconcept of heritage place in Korea, it is crucial to develop a targeted conservation system that reflects heritage values, establish a unified conservation process, and enhance the community capacity.
