Doseok(道釋) Figure Painting is a general term for paintings depicting Taoist and Buddhist figures. Among them, Doksung-do, the painting of Solitary Saint is one of Buddhist figure paintings. Doksung means a Buddhist disciple who attained enlightenment by practicing alone in the mountains. This thesis examined the characteristics and meaning of Solitary Saint, focusing on Doksung-do in Anyangwon among the paintings of the late Joseon Dynasty. In this painting, the old monk sits with his left knee raised and his right knee lowered, with the soles of his feet touching. His left hand is slightly raised and holding a plantain, and his right arm rests its elbow on a table for a sutra. An incense burner and a Buddhist sutra are placed on the table. The monk sits on a slightly inclined rock and there is a steep rocky cliff behind him. And a pine tree stands proudly next to the monk. This painting was painted in 1812 by the monk painter Shingyeom to be enshrined in Geumseondae Hermitage, a branch temple of Kimryongsa Temple, located in Undalsan Mountain, Mungyeong. As a result of analyzing the iconography of this painting, it was found that it was composed by recombining the existing Arhat iconography. In addition, it was found that among Arhat or Doksung paintings produced after this painting, there were many works that accepted the iconography of Doksung-do the collection of Anyangwon. Doksung-do in Anyangwon, painted by Shingyeom alone, is the earliest work with a clear production period among the extant Dokdoks. This painting is a standard work of Doksung-do in the late Joseon Dynasty and at the same time has a very important meaning as a work that can examine the process of establishment of Doksung-do and painters' perceptions.
