Yun Duseo(1668-1715), a seonbi painter was ahead of the various new trends of paintings in the 18th century. He could create a new level and concept of paintings through new knowledge and thinking. He groped for new themes of paintings, painting manual and prints as new methodologies for paintings, and introduced new genres of Southern school painting and painting based on poetry. And he opened up the realistic portrait painting, genre painting and still life, developed painting collecting, painting criticism, and painting theory, and started new calligraphic style and art of seal making. He could resulted in the new development of paintings in the 18th century. In this study, Yun Duseo’s paintings were divided into two types. The first one is ‘sayui 寫意’ and the other is ‘sasil 寫實’. ‘Sayui 寫意’ is related with Yun Duseo’s classical studies focused on the reactionary Confucianism. Through reactionary studies, he tried to set up a new cannon in the field of painting. He suggested a new emphasis on Three Excellence of poetry, calligraphy, and painting and introduced new trends of Southern school of painting and paintings based on poetry. ‘Sasil’ is specially related with Yun’s extensive learning and Western learning. In the field of portrait painting, genre painting, still life etc., Yun’s new knowledge was adapted successfully. Yun Duseo is a pioneer who set up a new vision of seonbi painting, that is ‘yuhwa儒畵’. The painting of the late Joseon period broke a new ground in the history of Korean painting. And the pioneer, Yun Duseo’s role and achievements can not be praised too much.

恭齋尹斗緖(1668-1715)는 조선 후기 화단의 다양한 경향을 선도한 선구적인 선비화가이다. 그는 선비로서 시대와 국가, 사회에 대한 책임감을 지닌 채 학문과 사상을 담은 회화 예술을 창조하였다. 선비로서의 의식과 실천이 회화의 주제와 수준, 내용, 양식을 전반적으로 진보할 수 있게 한 것이다. 윤두서가 추구한 선비화가로서의 역할, 이를 토대로 형성된 새로운 성격의 선비그림, 儒畵의 대두를 통하여 조선 후기 화단은 크게 변화, 발전할 수 있었다. 그가 시도한 새롭고 다양한 주제의 모색, 화보와 판화 등 새로운 매체의 활용, 선비의 이상과 격조를 담아낸 남종화와 시의도를 새롭게 시도한 점, 사실적인 정신과 수법을 담은 영정, 풍속화 및 정물화 등의 개척, 회화의 수장과 감평의 선호, 화론의 저술, 새로운 서예와 전각의 추구 등 다방면에서의 활약은 조선 후기 화단에 큰 자극을 주었다본고에서는 윤두서의 회화를 寫意와 寫實이라는 두 유형으로 분류하여 고찰하였다. 사의란 윤두서가 유학의 변화를 모색하면서 추구한 尙古的古學과 관련된 분야로서 詩書畵三絶의 추구, 南宗畵 및 詩意圖 등을 통해서 새로운 대안을 제시하였다. 사실은 博學과 西學 등 새로운 학문적, 사상적 경향과 관련된 분야로서 影幀과 風俗畵, 靜物畵, 사실적 動物畵 등에서 그 성과가 나타났다. 특히 서학을 토대로 이루어진 과학적 응시라는 새로운 인식과 관찰 및 사생이라는 새로운 회화 방법론은 유학의 형이상학적 논의를 극복하려는 문제의식과도 관련이 있어 보인다. 조선후기 회화가 이전과 다른 새로운 경지로 변화하였다고 할 때, 그 출발점에 서 있던 선비화가 윤두서의 역할과 공로는 충분히 강조되어야 할 것이다.
