This thesis will take a closer look at how the idea of ‘the Dionysian’ is implemented in Fedor Sologub"s novel The Petty Demon. The Petty Demon fully captures the aesthetic meaning that the Russian symbolist art gave to ‘the Dionysian’. In this work, ‘the Dionysian’ which is found in the eroticism of love between Sasha and Lyudmila embodies the idea of the aesthetic utopia of symbolism that art could overcome the “nightmare of material existence” of this vulgar world and restore the unity of heaven and earth in the sense of Solovyov’s philosophy.
While ‘the Dionysian’ of Sasha and Lyudmila"s love concretely embodies the ideas of the aesthetic utopia and lifecreating art, which are the basic myths of symbolism, at the same time it clearly demonstrates Sologub’s doubt about the feasibility of these ideologies in reality (жизнеспособность).
The Dionysian’ in The Petty Demon is espoused by Sologub"s pessimistic view of art. The exit to the ‘higher’, divine world which is seen through the love of Sasha and Lyudmilla is only a temporary consolation and a transient dream. In this reality, the ecstasy of love is only possible in the closed room where Sasha and Lyudmila meet, and only through Lyudmila"s dreams and lies. Sologub"s pessimistic view of art, which denies art’s ability to transform reality, is combined with his pessimistic view of the world.
