In the late 19th century and early 20th century, there was a growing interest in Orient to both symbolism poets of the mainstream of Russian literature and the poets of different trend of literature in Silver Age. While the symbolism poets of old generation who led to the interest in the Orient in the late 19th century, were interested in exotic natural environment, mythology, religion, and philosophy, the new trend of literature of the 20th century was deepened and extended to the new perspective on the Orient, which influenced on Russian ethnicity and the formation of country due to the aftermath of the Russo-Japanese War from 1904 to 1905.
This paper examines oriental image and appearance reflected upon the poetry of symbolism in the older generation, focused on the works of V. Y. Brysov, K. D. Balmont, and F. K. Sologub.
First, Brysov, who led the Russian symbolism, has delivered the exotic oriental intimate feelings and experiences through a number of poets. In "dreams of humanity", he moved toward a new creative writing of poem through various imitations on creative writing of poem reflecting the local and ethnic characteristics of the East and West. He released poetry describing general exotic oriental poetry along with delivery of the professional knowledge and understanding of oriental cultures by introducing creative techniques and trends to the flow of the poetry in Silver Age of Russian poetry.
Balmont had an interest in folklore of various nations, and myths and legends associated with the origins of the universe. He mastered numerous languages by self-study, and grew up in a philosophical mood which emphasized the rationality and argumentation of the West. He felt special interested in the oriental philosophy and culture, and continued to have an interest in the philosophy and attitude of human beings, with an emphasis on the instantaneous realization in the everyday life and tranquility of human beings, pursuing the unity of man and nature. He traveled to many countries of Orient where are the birthplace of human civilization, religion, and philosophy and he expressed his feelings and experiences he felt looking at those places.
The majority works of Sologub accounted for the frailty of human life and afterlife. He wrote poems that reflect his own views and contemplation about reincarnation and rebirth referred to in the doctrine of Buddhism and Hinduism. Both I. Annensky and V. Ivanov also wrote poems about Buddhism reflecting the interest in Orient. Symbolism poets who worked in the late 19th and early 20th centuries set the two worlds of their literary characteristics and expressed them independently in a variety of forms reflecting the corresponding view of art and the world.
