The present study was designed to examine gender role stereotypes on children’s expressive drawings, compared to Tuman’s (1999) theories and hypotheses and investigate whether Truman’s proposition might still be legitimate today: if each sex of children has preferences on content and style that are influenced by cultural and societal stereotypes and their correlation to the way of creating their drawings. Participants were 60 school-aged children (30 boys and 30 girls), who attended public elementary schools in a middle-class community of Northern New Jersey. The exact age range was 6 to 8 years. Participants were told a narrative that included the themes of both male and female preferred illustrations and were asked to draw a favorite part of the story on 8“x11” pieces of white paper using pencils and colored markers. Results indicate that boys’ and girls’ drawings exhibit some contrasts in subject matter and style. However, the differences between two sexes, choosing particular elements in terms of conceptual contents and formal visual characteristics, have been largely reduced than Tuman’s study. The researcher concludes with implications and recommendations for further scholarly study.
