This study aims to investigate young children"s conception of gender. More specifically, children"s beliefs about gender, characteristics of each gender, gender-roles, gender stereotypes, and possibilities of breaking out of the stereotypes are explored. The participants of this study are thirteen 5-year-old children at A child-care center in J province. Data are collected from 3 individual interviews on each child and to help the children elaborate their thoughts and feelings, video clips of their physical movement and several pictures have been used in the interviews. The findings of this study are as following: 1) the children made the distinction of sex based on external characteristics such as outward appearances and actions, 2) the children showed the tendency to recognize other sex negatively, 3) the children strengthened gender stereotypes based on dichotomizing sex distinction and teasing their friends, 4) the children seemed to be convinced when asked additional questions about possibilities of breaking out of the stereotypes, 5) the children rejected gender stereotypes when experienced breaking gender roles directly or indirectly. The academic and practical meanings of the findings and suggestions are discussed.
