Examined in this article are the Bogshi(覆試) and Chinshi(親試) examinations, which were a specific type of Gwageo(科擧) exams that were held irregularly, and supervised by the King himself during the Goryeo period. How these exams were operated, and what kind of nature they revealed, are primarily discussed here.
Unlike the Song dynasty’s Jeonshi(殿試) exam, these two exams in Goryeo were never institutionalized as the final step in the Gwageo institution, which shows us the unique nature and characteristics of the Goryeo examination system. Accordingly, instead of a traditional frame of discussion (used in analyzing Song’s Jeonshi system), which tended to focus on the conflicts between the King and the exam supervisors, the aforementioned two Goryeo exams’ status, fashion of operation, and nature will be the focus of this work.
Bogshi exam was first held in 983, and since the year 994 it was established as a test held by the King himself, through which the ruler of the dynasty would (re-)examine the talents of successful passers of the regular Yebushi exam. The King had full discretion throughout the entire Bogshi process, and successful passing of Bogshi would provide the passer with an additional honor, as he was able to pass not only the Yebushi exam but also the ultimate test from the King. Realizing that such practice could have a number of utilities and benefits, the King would sporadically arrange Bogshi exams to be held. The Goryeo Gwageo system, which developed on a social structure different from that of Song, proceeded to not only reinforce the Yebushi exam but enlarged low-level tests as well, and recognized the King’s authority in both Yebushi and Bogshi exams.
Later, when the Goryeo Gwageo system was fully developed with the regular Yebushi exam at the heart of it, the Bogshi practice-which apparently exhausted its utility- was finally discontinued. But Chinshi, another form of test also supervised by the King, continued to be held, separately from regular Yebushi exams. It was held in various formats, and it too granted the Goryeo King with wide range of discretion in selecting talents. The Goryeo Gwageo system continued to feature this sort of a characteristic: ongoing tests that were neither part of nor the final stage of the three-staged Yebushi system, like the Yebushi-related Bogshi exam, and the Chinshi exam that had nothing to do with Yebushi.
