This paper focuses on the inner order of 〈Gwapyetan〉, included in Kim Yak-ryeon’s collection of literary works Duamjeyeong, and examines the text’s narrative aspects to elucidate its literary value.
〈Gwapyetan〉 can be divided into three parts: introduction, body and conclusion, and is classified into five or nine paragraphs in detail. The writer Kim Yak-ryeon claims that the Gwageo (civil service examination) has been debased: he criticizes, the attitudes of scholars preparing for the Gwageo, the corruption of the entire examination process, and the badly written examination answers. In order to solve such an abuse of the Gwageo, he brings forward a concrete plan that details a reform of the government, a correct selection of candidates, and a correct performance of ethics. Finally, he claims that high officials and scholars will assume these roles.
The abuse of the Gwageo is described in chronological order, while and the corruption of the Gwageo exam place is heavily analyzed. However, the solution plan is described in reverse order and there is no mention of solution for corruption in the exam place. It can be assumed, then, that the writer Kim Yak-ryeon believed that corruption of the Gwageo exam place was temporary and easy to resolve, since the wrong study attitude and the decline of the writing style recognizes the high officials’ responsibility.
〈Gwapyetan〉 are the lyrics that criticize the reality reflected from the provincial aristocrats’ perception of the Gwageo, and they earnestly treat the abuse of the Gwageo. It is valuable that the only piece of the lyrics work treating the abuse of the Gwageo earnestly, and that the work is written in Hangul.
