Wesley wanted himself to be called “homo unius libri.” He considered the Bible as the most important thing in his Christian life, and tried to read, study, and practice the Bible throughout his life. For him, the Bible is one of the instituted means of grace that enables him to experience God’s presence or power. Investigating the Bibles used by Wesley, this study examines Wesley’s views on important issues related to the Bible, such as Apocrypha and Canon, inerrancy of the Bible, inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and historical and textual criticism, etc.
Wesley accepted the Protestant canon and recognized the theological and spiritual values of the entire Bible. Accordingly, he used almost all the books of the Old and New Testaments as texts for sermons. Wesley’s view of the Bible, which affirms the accuracy of the text of the Bible, seems close to the theory of literal inspiration. Wesley did not believe that the inerrancy of the biblical record was diminished by the presence of mistakes. This is because “divine condescension” enabled the human authors of the Bible to articulate the truths of revelation within the particularities and limits of their language and culture or of present science. Therefore, those who read the Bible must read it seeking the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. For Wesley, the center of the Bible’s teachings is “the way of salvation by faith,” and the Bible must be understood as one entire body. Wesley tried to remove the contradictions revealed in the Bible by understanding the literary and historical context of the text while following the theory of inspiration.
Wesley"s view of the Bible will allow us not to be reluctant to accept the cultural specificity of the various books of the Bible and the literary skills of various authors, which are clearly shown by modern biblical scholarship, while still firmly acknowledging the authority of the Bible as “the Book of God.” In this respect, his view of the Bible accepted the traditional, conservative understanding of the Bible, but it is quite consistent with the modern historical understanding of the Bible. As his theology generally is, Wesley’s view of the Bible is characterized as a synthesis and via media.
