If we can consider the characteristics of the modern world to be the emergence of an anarchical ethics and the decline of theism, I believe then that an anti-teleological or non-teleological world view has been the background reason of those characteristics. This paper is an attempt to suggest an alternative to overcome such an anti-objective world view.
Provided that anti-teleological world-views have been heavily affected by a physical naturalism, this paper examines the variety of scientific movements that have produced such a naturalism. Among those scientific movements are, the explanation based on efficient causation, the mechanistic world view, and the philosophy of evolution. I believe that understanding these scientific movements will enable us to see what the characteristics of physical naturalism are. In addition, it will also make us see how anti-teleological world-views came to prevail, and how alternatives to anti-teleological world-views and physical naturalism could be constructed.
While it is true to say that those scientific movements underlying such a naturalism has brought about a decline in the teleological world-views, it has created many problems too. Therefore, we will look at what kind of problems have been caused by the anti-teleological world-views.
Nevertheless, I will hold that a teleological objective world-view can still play a positive role in today’s world. Of course, a condition is needed here. That is, since a traditional style of teleology has had many philosophical problems, a new kind of teleology is necessary. Therefore, I will deal with the tasks of what modifications should be made in order to create such a new teleology, which might satisfy the needs of today’s scientific intellectuals. Furthermore, I will argue that the new teleology will lead us to the construction of a new sort of theism.

무정부적 윤리와 유신론적 종교의 침체라는 표현으로 현대 세계의 특징을 요약할 수 있다면 그 배경에는 반-목적론적 혹은 무-목적론 세계관이 자리 잡고 있다. 본 논문은 이런 반-목적론적 세계관의 극복을 위한 시도의 하나이다.
본 논문의 일차적 목표는 반-목적론이 주로 물리적 자연주의에 의해서 영향받아왔다는 전제하에, 그런 자연주의를 생산한 여러 과학운동들, 즉 작용인적 설명 방식과 기계론적 세계관, 그리고 진화의 철학 등에 대해서 상세히 살펴본다. 이들을 이해해야 자연주의의 특징은 물론 어떻게 반-목적론이 득세하게 되었는지, 나아가 반-목적론과 자연주의의 대안을 어떻게 구성할 수 있을지 알 수 있게 되기 때문이다.
그 과정에서 논자는 진화의 철학이 물리적 자연주의의 토대가 되어 왔다고 전제하고, 진화철학의 특징을 살펴본다. 진화의 철학이 펼치는 개념들 중 특히 논자는 발생론적 설명에 초점을 맞추려 하는데, 이 설명은 주체와 존재에 대해 혁신적 주장을 펼치기 때문이다. 존재나 주체가 선천적으로 먼저 있는 것이 아니라 과정 속에서 후천적으로 탄생된다는 것인데, 이런 발생론적 설명은 서구인들로 하여금 물리적 자연주의에 매료되도록 만들었다. 그러나 이렇게 자연주의의 근간이 되는 과학운동이 목적론적 세계관의 쇠락을 가져온 것은 맞지만 그것은 문제도 많이 노출했는데, 특히 반-목적론 경향을 띠게 된 것이 그 하나이다. 따라서 반-목적론이 일으킨 이런 문제들의 실상에 대해서도 살펴본다.
그럼에도 목적론적 세계관이 아직도 현대 세계 내에서 긍정적 역할을 할 수 있다는 주장이 본 논문의 주요 주장이다. 물론 전통적 모델의 목적론은 많은 철학적인 문제점을 가지고 있기에 새로운 것이 제시되어야 한다고 논자는 보는데, 따라서 어떤 내용의 수정이 가해져야 오늘의 과학적 지성인들이 만족할 수 있는 새 목적론이 탄생될 수 있는지를 다룬다. 나아가 새로운 목적론은 어떻게 새로운 유신론을 정립할 수 있는지에 대해서도 보여 주겠다.
