This article analyses The Piper (Kim Gwang-Tae, 2015) as a period film constructed around the liminal qualities of allegory, fairy tale intertextuality, and temporal/spatial anachronisms. While a purely allegorical reading of the film addresses Korea’s post-Korean War authoritarianism, the argument presented in this paper is that these liminal traits interrogate and produce an ambiguous and discursive representation of history. In a parallel way to allegories of the colonial past, The Piper’s spatially oriented representations of the authoritarian period express the traumas of the period as contained outside of the linear timeline of the nation. The Piper, therefore complicates the backward looking lens of history to expose the gaps in more literal representations of authoritarianism in contemporary Korean cinema. Rather than work in the absolutes of right or wrong, justice and injustice, what is created is a diffuse and liminal reading of history as incomplete, contradictive, and still under negotiation.
