From the long period of conflict and negotiations, the recent This article describes the analysis of symbols in the titles of novels by Mochtar Lubis, as well as a comparison between the symbols of these titles. This research was conducted through descriptive and comparative qualitative methods. The data in this study are the titles of novels by Mochtar Lubis, namely Tak Ada Esok (TAE), Jalan Tak Ada Ujung (JTAU), Senja di Jakarta (SdJ), Tanah Gersang (TG), Harimau! Harimau! (HH), and Maut dan Cinta (MdC). The data were analyzed by processing the symbols contained in the title text and then described using the theory related to the symbols presented by Riffaterre, Jassin, and Lubis. Furthermore, the analysis is carried out by comparing the symbols contained in each title. The title of the novel by Mochtar Lubis has a significant meaning to the content of the novel. In the title TAE, JTAU, SdJ, TG, and HH, it can be interpreted as a figure of speech or a figure of speech, a metaphor, or an indirect comparison. However, MdC is not a figure of speech or figure of speech, but is meaningful in accordance with the word, namely the adventure story of the character elements which are full of these two elements, namely death and love. Based on the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that the titles of novels by Mochtar Lubis are symbols of individual life to state life. TAE, JTAU, SdJ, HH, and MdC are symbols of state life starting from the struggle for independence to the time of organizing state life. Meanwhile, TG is a symbol of individual life due to lack of parental attention. Thus, it can be stated that Mochtar Lubis has a work that is full of symbols?not only symbols of the life of struggle, national politics, and the chaos of state life?but also symbols of individual human life. This study found that the text titles are related to the body of the text. All these symbols are always displayed by the author fairly and in accordance with the function and needs of the story.
