This paper examines the images of the cross recorded on the Byzantine seals and coins and analyzes their historical significances from the viewpoint of medieval European archival culture. The key points are as follows. First, the cross of victory developed as an icon representing the new imperial order and political ideology defined by the Christian Roman emperors. This type of Christian image combined with the Roman imperial power blossomed on the Byzantine emperor's seals and coins of the 8th-10th centuries. These evidences confirm that this type of imperial representation functioned as an icon legitimating the absolute power of the emperors as ‘agents of God on earth.’ Second, the cross of victory was an icon commemorating the dedication of the Byzantine military aristocracy who had defended the Christian Roman empire against the invasion of the Muslims. The motifs of ‘cruciform monogram’ or ‘patriarchal cross’ symbolizing the suffering and triumph of Jesus Christ as the mediator between God and humans, appears also on the seals of Anatolian aristocracy and its members. These evidences demonstrate that this cross image have served as building the horizontal solidarity between the Anatolian aristocracies and the Macedonian dynasty. Third, we observed that the cross images on Byzantine seals and coins were diffused into European monarchies and municipal cities at the times when social contacts and cultural exchanges increased between Byzantium and Western Europe. In this point of view, we can understand that this type of records and its archival tradition contributed to have served as producing the modern citizenship in Europe as well as diffusing the modern political order and ideology in and out the European sovereign's territory.
