Like secular ordinary coins, Christian coins also show political and social characteristics. Nevertheless, the Christian coinage has changed continuously, reflecting or leading the emergence of various Christian symbols and popular religiosity. The most common motifs in the Roman Empire as non-Christian coins are those that praise the army and the emperors. Among “Capta Coins” Judea Capta is the most famous commemorative coin related to Christian history and also in terms of the history of coins.
The first Christian coin to appear from Constantine the Great era is a coin in the form of a combination of the first two letters (X-P) of Christ’s name. The second coin to appear in the history of Christian coinage is also the cross coin issued by Constantine the Great in the fourth century. The third Christian coin was the one called “Milvian Vision Coin” issued by General Vetranio (d.356), who claimed to be the emperor in the post-imperialist struggles, immediately after publication, millions of castings were cast in the Roman Empire and considered then the most popular coin. The fourth Christian coin is the one called “Alpha & Omega” coin. During the period from the late 4th century to the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century, Christian coins were published openly stressing the nature of power as warlike coin.
In the fifth century, the first coin with the single image of the cross appeared, which issued by Emperor Arcadius. The crucifix coins are the most produced Christian coins in the Byzantine Empire. Coins more issued than Jesus’ name coins or Labarum coins were cross coins. For the first time in the history of coins, a coin with the face of Christ Jesus appeared during Justin II (r.685-695). This form became the epitome of the bronze follis coins of the Byzantine Roman Empire. Byzantine coinage shows the diversity of Christian phrases. The titles of the ministry of Christ, which were not seen in the early Christian coinage of the Western Roman Empire, were used. The famous phrases such as “King of Jesus Christ” (IhSuS XRISTUSS bASILEu bASILE), “EMMANOVH”, “The Christ victor” (NIKA), and “The Savior of Christ” (Salvator) were mainly used.
