H?yny?k S?sanggi is a Korean translation which was published in 1949 by a Korean linguist Yi Kangno (1918-2012) who remade the Chinese classical play Xixiangji as a novel. H?yny?k S?sanggi is of great significance in that it is Korea’s first modern translation of Xixiangji narrative retranslation in which the intent of translator and translation is clearly identified. H?yny?k S?sanggi is also meaningful that it is a result born as an ‘original’ novel work out of the original-centered limits of existing retranslations while inheriting the old tradition of Korea that has enjoyed the Chinese play Xixiangji as a kind of narrative and the precedents of the existing narrative retranslations. The retranslator focused on enhancing the storytelling and readability of texts by actively using excellent organizing power, ‘direction ability’, and language expressiveness and greatly exceeded the performance of existing retranslation versions in this respect. In addition, H?yny?k S?sanggi is an invaluable material that shows the acceptance and transformation of Xixiangji at that time in that it is a domestic Xixiangji publication uniquely identified until the appearance of Yang, Hoeseok's modern translation in 1996 after the 1930s. H?yny?k S?sanggi can be said to be a ‘Korean reading book’ that revived the production of domestic Xixiangji related texts for a while that have been quiet for a considerable period of time thanks to the publishing industry boom and the flow of time of the rise of national consciousness during the liberation period.
