Objective: The aim of this study is to study the acceptable work time for courier delivery based on the working conditions. Background: Courier work is atypical work, and although it is high-intensity work of 11 hours on average, there was no effort to reduce the work time of the courier. Since the intensity of work depends on the work environment (e.g., apartment, house, and villa), it is necessary to study how to determine acceptable hours in consideration of the work environment. Method: The independent variable is the environment and consists of four levels such as flat, 10% gradient, 16% gradient and stairs. Ten healthy men were asked to visit four times on different days to test the level of work intensity depending on the work environment. The dependent variables included Maximal acceptable work time (MAWT), Relative heart rate (RHR), and modified Rating of perceived exertion (modified RPE). Results: The results showed that the change in the environment increased the RHR, and thus the MAWT decreased. RHR, MAWT, and modified RPE showed significant differences according to the work environment. Work intensity was high in the order of flat, 10% gradient, 16% gradient, and stair. Conclusion: From the physiological perspectives, the acceptable work time calculated by heart rate can reduce body load by lowering work intensity. A large load was applied to the body under the condition of slope walking (e.g., gradient and stairs), and hence the acceptable work time was reduced. Application: This result demonstrated the physiological effect of reducing the acceptable work time of courier workers to relieve the work intensity.
