Objective: This study aims to evaluate the workload of courier delivery workers by quantifying the workload of courier delivery tasks for systematic analysis and management.
Background: More than 80% of courier workers complain of musculoskeletal disorders, and courier work consists of unbalanced and excessive physiological exertions, such as moving heavy loads or performing repetitive tasks in the same posture. Therefore, the current type of work requires quantification and evaluation of allowable loads because the work sustainability of workers needs to be improved.
Method: Heart rate was measured during working hours to investigate the effect of maximum acceptable work times and overwork index on the type (A: apartment, B: house/villa, C: apartment/house/villa). A heart rate-based load evaluation was performed to derive quantitative biomarkers considering work characteristics. The heart rate of 21 courier workers was measured while working, and the maximum acceptable work times and overwork index were calculated. The maximum acceptable work times were calculated using the relative heart rate. The overwork index was calculated as the ratio of the maximum acceptable work times to the actual working hours.
Results: Comparing the maximum acceptable work times and overwork index in quantitative workload evaluation, Type B (house/villa) resulted in the highest indices: maximum acceptable work times: 4.3 hours and overwork index: 2.9.
Conclusion: Courier delivery workers operating in Types B~C, including houses and villas, work beyond the maximum acceptable work times. Therefore, it is necessary to lower the overwork index by reducing the working hours of delivery drivers, which can increase the sustainability of work.
Application: The results of this study can be used as a basic guideline to reduce working times related to delivery work and prevent overwork.
