Both Mou Zongsan and Lee Ming-huei have argued that Confucian ethics, like Kantian ethics, included the features of deontological ethics, such as the emphasis on autonomous will, freedom, and categorical imperatives etc.. However, many scholars have argued that Confucian ethics emphasized the concepts of emotion, virtue, and human nature and so was different from deontology. In the face of this critique of the deontological interpretation of Confucian ethics, I will insist that the emphasis on emotions, virtues, and human nature can be accommodated in deontology. Therefore, the goal of this thesis is to defend the deontological interpretation of Confucian ethics with a focus on the concept of virtue and ends found in Confucian ethics and Kant’s ethics. In order to defend this position, I will say that Confucian concept of virtue can be viewed as based on reason rather than on emotion, and the Confucian concept of human nature of Confucianism can be seen as the ends or purpose of human life rather than the natural inclination of human beings. Furthermore, I will point out that the Kant’s concepts of virtue and ends play important roles even in Kant's philosophy, which can be said to be the representative ethical system of deontology.
